How consumers are protected
Consumer education
Education officers from the Department of Consumer Affairs teach people their rights and responsibilities: refundable and non-refundable goods, vehicle inspections, making complaints, legal aid and competition law.
Investigating complaints
The Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission investigates breaches of the Competition and Fair Trading Act 2006 and the Consumer Affairs Act 2011.
Enforcement
When a business is found to have broken the law, the Commission can apply financial penalties, punitive remedies and injunctions to correct its behaviour.
